Announcement of Open Leadership Positions for 2015-16

HCBA members are encouraged to apply for officer and director positions within the association.  Deadline to apply is March 29, 2015.  Positions include:

  • HCBA Secretary (track position serves as president in 2018)
  • At-large Director on the HCBA Board
  • At-large Finance & Planning Committee member
  • MSBA Assembly
  • Central MN Legal Services Board member

Bar Benefit: Join Us March 19 for the HCBF's Annual Fundraising Gala

Be a part of the Hennepin County Bar Foundation's 35th annual Bar Benefit -- the legal community's gala night of fun and fundraising.  The Bar Benefit takes place Thursday, March 19, at the Radisson Blu Minneapolis (note new location).  The festivities begin at 5:00 p.m with our Pro Bono Awards presentation. HCBA's Diversity, Professionalism, and Advancement of Justice Awards: Nominations Due 3/31
 
These annual awards highlight individuals and firms making a significant contribution to the profession and to the advancement of justice. Awards will presented at the HCBA Annual Meeting in May.  The awards panels welcome nominations for the following:

  • Diversity Awards:  Recognizing the substantial and long-term contributions of a legal employer, an attorney, and a non-attorney to the furtherance of diversity and inclusion, civil rights, civil liberties, or human rights in the legal profession.
  • Professionalism Awards:  Recognizing members of the bench and bar who best exemplify the pursuit of the practice of law as a profession, including a spirit of public service and promotion of the highest possible level of competence, integrity, and ethical conduct.   

2015 nomination forms must be received by March 31.

Your President Reports: Diversity & Inclusion -- Taking the Initiative to Do More, Do Better

Not to be provocative (he writes with a wink), but—truth be told—our legal profession, and our bar associations, and some of our law firms, were for quite a while (sometimes unintentionally, but for far too long) "affinity groups” in their own right—for straight, white males.  I have no doubt that I benefited from related breaks along the way.  So it went; but that’s different from "so it goes.”  Times change; or at least evolve. We’ve seen and been involved in some good, unique, and encouraging efforts and successes of late.  We do, though, need to be vigilant and diligent—to take forward-leaning initiatives; to convert well-meaning into well-doing (to borrow Verna Myers’ phrase).  Hence this column.  Read More >>

HCBA Recognizes Members for Pro Bono Service
Each year, the HCBA recognizes three attorneys who have made a significant contribution through pro bono service. The Pro Bono Publico awards are presented to lawyers in recognition of the time, knowledge, and devotion given in service to the community. Recipients of the 2015 awards will be honored at the 35th annual Bar Benefit on Thursday, March 19, where family, friends, and colleagues celebrate the high ideals represented by these individuals:  attorneys John Koneck, Dorinda Wider, and Larry Espel.

Ask a New Lawyer: Social Networking

Get Answers to All of the Social Media Questions You Didn't Know You Had!   Join us on April 2, for the next event in the highly-regarded Vintage Lawyer/New Lawyer series. These always-popular networking opportunities are not to be missed. This session aims to build generational bridges by breaking down technology barriers. New lawyers will act as digital tour guides for social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Vine, Snapchat, and others. Vintage lawyers will also have the option of requesting a "tech mentor” from the new lawyers ranks.
