The Hennepin County Bar Association is a private, non-profit professional organization which strives to ensure a fair and accessible legal system by promoting public understanding of and confidence in our system of justice by working with private attorneys and the courts to improve the administration of justice.

The HCBA provides the programs listed below as a public service to our community.

The Lawyer Referral and Information Service refers persons with legal issues to experienced private attorneys.  A personal consultation will be arranged for the next day... close to your work or home... with a member attorney who practices in the area of law you need.

Speakers Bureau consists of volunteer attorneys willing to speak to community groups and schools on legal topics.  A variety of topics are available.  Requests must be made 3 weeks prior to speaking date.

The HCBA is committed to working with teachers to help educate and inspire students about the law and the justice system. Resources we offer include: Legal Stuff  booklets, our annual Legal Expo, We Care resource cards, and a Speakers Bureau of volunteer attorneys.  Read more here.

Tel-Law is a phone-bank of 75 recorded messages written by lawyers to provide general legal information on a variety of law-related topics. 

Available 24 hours a day.  There is no charge for metro-area callers.

Misdemeanor Defense Project provides volunteer attorneys each day at the four Hennepin County courthouses to give brief advice without charge to persons facing misdemeanor criminal charges.

Legal Access Point offers free 15-minute consultations with volunteer attorneys at the Hennepin County Government Center.

Low Fee Family Law Project provides low-cost legal services for clients of modest means who have family law concerns such as divorce, child support, or child custody. (Financial screening is required.)

The Hennepin County Bar Association offers a legal fee arbitration program to parties disputing legal fees for legal services.

VLN serves the legal needs of low-income individuals in Hennepin County by matching them with volunteer attorneys from the community. Services range from advice to full representation.  VLN provides a variety of civil legal services. Visit VLN's Web site for more information.
