Minneapolis: -- Duane Stanley, Assistant Executive Director (and Communications Director) of the Hennepin County Bar Association (HCBA), has received the E.A. “Wally” Richter Leadership Award from the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE). Unable to attend the award luncheon in person, Stanley was surprised with the presentation via telephone during the NABE Communications Section workshop held Oct. 8 in Portland, Maine.
The Richter Award is the section’s highest honor and is presented to only one member annually for outstanding achievement in the field of communications, extraordinary service to colleagues in NABE and distinguished leadership of the Communications Section. Stanley chaired the NABE Communications Section in 2005-2006, during which time he helped with the formulation and implementation of the section’s strategic plan. Since 2008, he has served on the board of directors for NABE, a national association formed in 1941, dedicated to serving professionals leading bar associations and law-related organizations.
In accepting the award, Stanley stated, “There has been nothing in my two decades as an association communicator that has contributed so much to my professional development, growth in knowledge and skills, and personal enrichment through relationships with other professionals as my involvement with NABE. Colleagues have blessed me richly.”
Stanley was hired by the HCBA 23 years ago as part-time director of public legal education. Over the years his responsibilities have expanded progressively, and he has twice served as interim executive director. Currently, he directly manages the communication, technology, and legal services efforts of the 8,500 member association.
The county bar’s communications team, which he leads, has received a variety of awards for publications and projects through NABE and the Midwest Society of Association Executives. Stanley has also been active professionally with the Minnesota chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators and the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits.
