Minneapolis (04-09-02): -- Marlene Garvis has been elected to serve as Secretary of the Hennepin County Bar Association (HCBA), Minnesota’s largest local bar association, with a membership of 8,000 members. The position of Secretary is the first step of a five-year leadership track of service on the HCBA’s Executive Committee. Garvis is scheduled to serve as president during 2005-2006.
An attorney with the Jardine, Logan and O’Brien law firm in St. Paul since 1993, Garvis focuses her practice primarily on professional liability issues, employment, product liability, health care consulting, and professional licensing and discipline matters. She makes her home in Minnetonka. Ms. Garvis and her husband, Arlan, have three adult sons: Jason, a Cook County (Illinois) States Attorney; Matt, a CPA with A.T. Kearney (Chicago, Illinois); and Mike, in Institutional Equity Sales with Merrill Lynch, in Minneapolis.
A graduate of Hamline University School of Law, Garvis is admitted to practice in the state courts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa, as well as the federal district and appellate courts in the 7th and 8th circuits. She earned a masters degree in nursing (Boston University) and bachelors degrees in nursing (College of St. Catherine) and sociology (University of Minnesota). Garvis is a member of the adjunct faculty at the Hamline University School of Law and the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. She serves on numerous community and professional association boards.
Garvis is active in the Hennepin County, Ramsey County, Minnesota State and American bar associations, serving in a wide variety of roles. She served as president of Minnesota Women Lawyers and is completing her second year as president of the Hennepin County Bar Foundation. She is an active writer and lecturer locally, particularly in matters related to health care and the law. With her election, she joins Jean Holloway, John Dornik and Brent Routman as officers of the Hennepin County Bar Association.
