"The Danger of a Single Story” for Lawyers: Recognizing Our Biases with Clients and Colleagues

1.0 CLE Elimination of Bias credit applied for this program.

When news and comments on one aspect of a group of people, or of a nation, dominate the inputs we receive, that "single story” can become the core touchpoint – the base of assumptions which we carry into our interactions with others. What are the "single stories” that dominate our initial impressions and interactions with clients? What are the single stories that shape our views of others within the legal profession? Are there single stories that are particular to this Hennepin County region? In this session, we will use the TEDTalk, "The Danger of a Single Story,” from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as a springboard for discussion. Adichie is the author of the acclaimed novel Americanah and a MacArthur fellow. Session moderators will lead participants in applying Adichie’s experiences and insights to the realm of practicing law. We will explore the biases that our own experiences and influences have built into "single stories” and how we can build new narratives that broaden our ways of thinking, working, and serving.

Facilitators: Alan Haynes, Director of the Career Center at the University of Minnesota Law School and Mary-Margaret Zindren, Executive Director, Hennepin County Bar Association
