Criminal Law: Who is my client? Who isn't my client? And what does it matter?

1.0 Ethics CLE credit applied for this program.

Featuring: Kevin T. Slator, Senior Assistant Director, Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility

As lawyers, we should avoid inadvertently giving legal advice in "cocktail chatter” or in other casual situations, in part because of potential malpractice concerns.  But what about ethical issues?  We’ll look more broadly at the important issues of "who is my client and who isn’t my client?”  We’ll review the ethical issues arise from casual contact with prospective clients as well as from contact in more formal settings such as legal advice clinics, including business transactions, conflicts of interest, solicitation, confidentiality, and contact with represented and unrepresented parties.
