Diversity Committee: Lawyers and Impairment - A Frank Discussion of the Landmark ABA/Hazelden Betty Ford Study “The Prevalence of Substance Use and Other Mental Health Concerns Among American Attorneys”

1.0 Elimination of Bias credit applied for.

The ABA and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation collaborated on multi-state research project to study substance and mental health issues among attorneys. The results were published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine in early February.   21 % of respondents drank at problem levels, 28% reported symptoms of depression and 18% reported symptoms of anxiety.  11% had thoughts of suicide at some time during their careers.   Common barriers to seeking help were identified and survey results showed that the highest incidence of impairment occurred in the first 10 years of practice.

Kim Lowe, HCBA President, Patrick R. Krill, J.D., Director of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's Legal Professionals Program and co-author of the study, and Joan Bibelhausen, Executive Director of Minnesota Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers will discuss the findings of the study and what they mean for the legal profession in Minnesota.
