Candid Conversations with the Bench and Bar
Jurors: Unveiling the Mystery

The cornerstone of our justice system is the jury, but the way juries see—and decide—cases is largely a mystery.   Because jury trials are infrequent, however, many attorneys lack experience in presenting to jurors.  In this session, actual jurors who have heard and decided cases will give a rare look into jury service and decision making by talking about their experiences.   Hennepin County District Court Judges Laurie Miller and Jay Quam will lead a discussion that addresses the many aspects of the juror’s experiences, including such things as:

  • Voir dire
  • Opening statements
  • Attorney and client appearance and behavior
  • Evidence presentation
  • Closing arguments
  • Jury deliberation

The objective of the session will be to provide the attendees with an understanding of how best to tap into the perspectives of the jury in their next jury trial and to help them appreciate that the jury system is alive and well in today’s system of justice.
