Assuring and Assessing Professional Competence: A Growing Challenge in an Aging Professional Population

With increasing life expectancy, professionals expect to work in their professions longer than previous generations did. Professional competence demands a higher level of capacity than capacity to make a will, for example. However, professional decline is often masked for a much longer period than the decline of the "average" brain because the behaviors and intellectual capacity acquired over a lifetime the individual to a seemingly more "average" level. While most seasoned lawyers bring a level of wisdom and experience unmatched in younger peers undetected cognitive decline can affect their fitness for duty.
