Hear how changes to traffic and criminal laws could impact your bicycle-related case.
- VULNERABLE ROAD USER: Increasing the penalties for killing someone or causing permanent impairment while committing a careless or worse driving offense. Also, increasing the penalties (driver’s license suspension, community service, etc.) for causing substantial bodily harm to a vulnerable road used (which includes bicyclists).
- SHARE THE FULL LANE: Changes to the Operation of a Bicycle statute, Chapter 169.222, that would change the "as far to the right as practicable" language to make it clearer to both the motorist and bicyclist that the bicyclist has the right to use the full lane if needed for safe operation.
- STOP AND CHECK: Requiring drivers involved in a crash to stop and investigate what was struck. Under the current hit-and-run statute, a driver involved in a collision with a person, another car or a bicyclist has no duty to stop if they do not know specifically what they hit. As a result, others injured in the crash may not get the medical assistance needed.
