Past
Bar Leaders Return to Old Haunts
Minneapolis
(11-14-03): -- Twenty-six past presidents of the
Hennepin County Bar Association return to the facilities
of their old private membership club at the Crowne Plaza
Northstar on Tuesday, November 18 for an 11:30 - 2 p.m.
luncheon. At the invitation of current president, John
Dornik, all living past presidents are invited for a
recognition luncheon, a time to reminisce, and the
opportunity to share their wisdom on issues of
significance to the profession today.
The club
opened its doors to the membership in 1963, 40 years
ago, after the Northstar Building was constructed. The
club provided business and social facilities for the
association, with catering and bar service provided
through the hotel. In 1983, after 20 years, the club
closed its doors as the association moved to new
facilities. But some of the original build-out of club
space is still a part of the Crowne Plaza facilities,
where it will host returning past presidents this week.
John
McNulty, the most senior living past president
(1966-67), was also the chair of the committee that
directed the club project. McNulty will speak briefly,
sharing memories of the old club days. He notes that the
club filled the very practical needs of the association,
particularly on Tuesdays, which were designated
"Bar Day." But he also emphasizes that the
club reflected a bygone era where camaraderie and
collegiality were hallmark characteristics of a
slower-paced professional life.
Association
staff have collected various items of nostalgic interest
to help recreate the club atmosphere for participating
past presidents. Most living past presidents will be
present; with some, who no longer live in the area,
unable to attend. A group photo will be taken at noon.
