Minnesota Judges and Lawyers to Reenact Landmark Civil Rights Case -- Brown vs. Board of Education -- For the Public on July 22 in Downtown Minneapolis
 

Minneapolis (7-09-04): -- This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education that put an end to the doctrine of “separate but equal” in our nation’s public education system. In observance of this landmark ruling, the Hennepin County Bar Association and the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers are sponsoring a reenactment of this landmark case for the public.

This special presentation features a distinguished panel of Minnesota judges and attorneys reading excerpts from the original arguments made before the Supreme Court by Thurgood Marshall and others. Participating judges and lawyers for this reenactment include:

This 50th anniversary presentation of the arguments and Supreme Court decision in
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas demonstrates how resolute citizens and dedicated attorneys can use the law and justice system to combat social wrongs.

The Hennepin County Bar Association (HCBA), the largest of Minnesota's 21 county bar associations and representing almost half of Minnesota's attorneys, is a private, non-profit organization which provides or supports many free or low-cost services to the public including: Volunteer Lawyers Network which provides free legal advice for low income individuals; Lawyer Referral and Information Services; public education programming; and financial grants through the Bar Foundation.

The Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers (MABL) is the leading minority bar association organized to promote and support the professional development of Black lawyers, judges, and law students in Minnesota. To this end, MABL is committed to the overall goal of representing the interests of Black citizens and their community in the legal profession and in the judicial system throughout the state.
