Have you signed the Lawyers Pledge of Professionalism?

In 1993, the Hennepin County Bar Association membership adopted the "Lawyers’ Pledge of Professionalism." While recognizing that attorneys already have obligations under the Minnesota Rules of Professional Conduct, the HCBA wanted to encourage colleagues to exceed those standards. The pledge calls upon members to conduct themselves in a way that promotes competent practice of law, engenders respect for the legal system, stresses the importance of professional interactions with colleagues, and emphasizes public service.

2007-2008 HCBA President Sonia Miller-Van Oort is asking fellow practitioners to give the pledge new life, by "signing on" in a true commitment to follow these guidelines.  She states in her May president’s column:

Although not an ‘honor code’ per se, the Lawyers’ Pledge of Professionalism is an extension of that concept in that it represents and defines what the bar deems to be not only professional conduct, but the honorable and admirable practice of law. Signing the pledge represents both a personal commitment and a public commitment to the principles set forth in that pledge. . . . Those individuals agree to be stewards of our legal profession and, in some regards, the greater legal system. . . . Together, those who have made the pledge will affect how this bar association’s members practice law and will instill and renew pride in our professional community."

A roster of those who sign the pledge and make this commitment to professionalism will be kept at the HCBA offices. The first 1,000 attorneys that return signed pledges will be given copies of the pledge suitable for framing.

Ms. Miller-Van Oort’s column and copies of the pledge to sign and return are available here or from Joseph Satter at joseph@hcba.org or 612-752-6621.

Is Your Firm's E-mail Legally Protected?

HCBA's agreement with RPost offers you discounts on registered email software.

With the U.S. federal e-discovery rules that went in effect on December 1, 2006, Registered E-mail provides a much-needed new safeguard and is essential for your records management and e-mail archiving.

RPost® is the legal standard for accountability in electronic business communications. Unlike traditional Internet e-mail, Registered E-mail® services provide the sender with legal and verifiable evidence the e-mail was sent and delivered with proof of the original content of that e-mail.

This proof is in the form of an electronic receipt, which is returned to the sender by e-mail in a tamper-detectable form that can be authenticated at any time.  RPost offers additional e-mail security features including PDF conversion, message encryption, and metadata cleaning.

Hennepin County Bar members receive the following discounts:

  • 50% discount on software license and account activation;

  • Free pack of Registered E-mail units with purchase of any service pack;

  • One month FREE with the monthly Flat Rate service.

RPost Registered E-mail works with your current e-mail client or system.

Be a Part of the HCBA's One-to-One Mentoring Program

The Hennepin County Bar Association’s new LAWYER-2-LAWYER Mentoring Program was created to provide you with a professional relationship that goes beyond the day-to-day office interaction.

It brings two attorneys together in a mentoring partnership to discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of work life, as well as its intersection with our personal and social lives. It is a place to grow as an attorney and a person.

Both mentoring partners come to the table with their own experiences to share, and challenges to discuss.

View PDF flyer and sign-up form.   For more information on attorney mentoring, contact Joy Hamilton, HCBA Membership Director, at
