The Impact of Law School Debt on
New Lawyers

This year, the HCBA New Lawyers Section is exploring the impact that law school student loan debt has on new attorneys--both personally and professionally.  The Section has released a video about their findings and this important issue, and created a resource sheet about student loan debt.

The Politicization of Our Judicial Elections

Ironic, to say the least. In 1857, our state’s founding fathers included judicial elections in the Minnesota Constitution in order to—get this—keep "politics” out of our judiciary. Their long-ago thought was that, if judicial appointments were left solely to the discretion of partisan governors, the governors would appoint unqualified, and likely biased, political cronies. Even when they gave the governor a dose of appointment authority, the founders still required that those appointees be either re-elected or un-elected—again, in order to keep "politics” out of the judiciary. Fast forward, "politics” is doing a lot more these days than climbing Minnesota’s courthouse steps and knocking at the courtroom door. My view? We are presently in the midst of the calm before storm; the quiet of the hurricane’s eye. We needn’t look any further than Iowa, Wisconsin, or Montana to sense that.
