Landlord & Tenant
Rental Licenses Processes and Pitfalls

Maintaining a rental license is essential for rental property in many municipalities in the State of Minnesota. If a landlord fails to maintain such a license, the landlord may be prohibited from collecting rent or evicting its tenants.  A landlord may even be compelled to repay all rent that it has received during the period when it did not maintain a valid license, which could cost the landlord hundreds of thousands of dollars.  It is therefore imperative that landlords and their attorneys understand the rental license process and the reasons why a rental license may be denied.  Presenters from both the City of Minneapolis and the City of St. Paul will walk participants through the process of obtaining and maintaining a license, the reasons why a license may be denied or revoked, and the repercussions for a landlord if the license is denied or revoked.
