Recent Developments in Defamation, Speech and Privacy Law

This CLE will feature a panel discussion regarding recent events in defamation, speech, and privacy law. The discussion of defamation will examine not only cases involving the news media, but also emerging defamation trends in the workplace, and claims against bloggers and website operators.  One case currently pending before the Minnesota Supreme Court may decide whether First Amendment-based restrictions on defamation claims related to speech on matters of “public concern” are limited to claims against traditional media defendants or available to other speakers as well.  Other ongoing litigation is examining (and perhaps redefining) the scope of the fair-report privilege.
