Significant challenges to diversity and inclusion (D&I) are rooted in human polarities, which by their nature simultaneously connect and divide people.  Because polarities are seldom examined, there is little acknowledgment of their power and influence when new diverse talent is merged into established organizational cultures. This session explores polarities that impact D&I, particularly status quo versus change and form versus substance. Participant exercises and discussion will illuminate how balance promotes cultures conducive to D&I.  

Form versus substance is one polarity that illustrates the need for greater balance.  D&I goals cannot simply focus on integrating new forms (e.g., gender, culture) without complimentary goals that produce substantive results (e.g., rich input into decision-making, well-rounded teams). This broader approach allows leaders to build more fertile organizational environments that attract and retain diverse talent.  

Learning Outcomes:

  • Gain perspectives on how polarization affects human relationships and in turn, D&I efforts
  • Identify key polarities that impact D&I and recognize approaches that promote balance
  • Distinguish opposing poles within key polarities and recognize where they converge and diverge
