|HCBA Honors Community Mediation Services|
News Release: May 02, 2013
The Advancement of Justice Award is the only award given by the HCBA to honor the work of an agency or an individual who is not a lawyer. The award is given to recognize contributions toward improving the administration of justice, achieving freedom through law, or increasing the public’s understanding of the legal profession and justice system.
The award was given to Community Mediation Services to recognize the work the organization is doing to help the Hennepin County court system relieve disputes. Through mutually agreed upon resolutions, Community Mediation Services is enhancing the administration of justice in Hennepin County by facilitating solutions to disputes, such as those in conciliation court, housing court, and family court.
Community Mediation Services now serves 40 communities in Hennepin County and in 2011 assisted over 10,000 people. The program’s success is due in large part through its over 120 community volunteers, who have been trained as mediators and serve as facilitators during mediations. Through its trained volunteers, Community Mediation Services helps people move from confusion to decisions and from conflict to resolution. Because the agreements reflect decisions made by the participants, mediated agreements enjoy high rates of compliance.
NOTE: At the beginning of May, Community Mediation Services changed its official name to Community Mediation and Restorative Services.
