|HCBA Announces Results of Plebiscite on Judicial Candidates|
News Release: September 12, 2012
For each of the contested races for the office of judge/justice, the plebiscite asked lawyers to vote for one candidate. There are two contested seats for the Hennepin County District Court bench; both are open seats, without an incumbent. In addition, 14 judges will appear on the ballot unopposed. In races for seats on the Minnesota Supreme Court there are three contested races, with sitting justices challenged by opponents. In addition, there are two uncontested races for seats on the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
In all three contested races for the Supreme Court, the members expressed their preference overwhelmingly for the incumbent justices. Of the two "open” seats on the Hennepin County District Court bench, seat 44 showed a narrow margin of preference—under 5%.
Judicial candidate preference polls have been conducted by the HCBA for over 25 years when there have been contested races for the Hennepin County District Court bench. This plebiscite was conducted electronically between August 28 and September 11, open to all members of the HCBA. Of 7820 members with active e-mail accounts on record, over 1600 responded, a response rate of 20.7%, the highest response rate since electronic polling began in 2004.
